A Google Sheet stops at 10 million cells, and columns count
Google limits a spreadsheet to 10 million cells, counted across every tab, and that budget is consumed by columns as well as rows. A 50 column export therefore tops out near 200,000 rows, far below what most people assume when they plan a sync. Spreadsheets imported from Excel carry a separate ceiling of 18,278 columns. Work out the cell budget before you build, because hitting it mid-write leaves a partially updated sheet.
Airtable allows 5 requests per second per base
Airtable enforces 5 requests per second per base across every pricing tier. Exceed it and you receive a 429 and must wait 30 seconds before requests succeed again. That 30 second penalty is the important half: a naive client that retries immediately keeps the base locked out, so a sync that would have taken two minutes takes an hour. Rate limit on the way out rather than reacting on the way back.
Airtable field types do not survive the trip
This is where the route actually goes wrong. A linked record is a relationship, and in a sheet it becomes a comma separated string of names that no longer points at anything. A multiple select becomes text. An attachment becomes a URL that may expire. A formula field becomes its computed value, frozen at export time. None of that raises an error, and all of it is invisible until somebody tries to use the sheet as a source of truth.
Decide what a row is keyed on before the first sync
Google Sheets has no primary key and no unique constraint, so nothing stops a sync writing the same record twice. Airtable record ids are stable and are the only safe key. Write the record id into a column, even a hidden one, and make the sync an upsert matched on it. Without that, the only way to avoid duplicates is to clear the sheet and rewrite it, which destroys anything a human added alongside.
Formatting and formulas are collateral damage
A full rewrite of a sheet takes conditional formatting, filters, and any formula somebody added in a spare column with it. This is the most common complaint about this route and it is entirely predictable. Write the raw data to a dedicated tab that nobody touches by hand, then let people build their formulas on a separate tab that references it. The sync then only ever overwrites a tab it owns.
Dates and numbers arrive as whatever the locale says
A sheet interprets what you write according to the spreadsheet locale, so an ISO date can land as text and a value with a leading zero can lose it. Write dates in an unambiguous format and set the target column format explicitly rather than trusting inference. The failure mode is a column that sorts alphabetically while looking like dates, which nobody notices until a report is wrong.
One direction, chosen deliberately
Two way sync between a database and a spreadsheet is a conflict resolution problem wearing a friendly hat: two people edit the same record in two places within the same minute and something has to lose. Unless you genuinely need it, pick a direction and make the other side read only. Airtable as the system of record and the sheet as a view is the version that stays correct.

It is not a backup, because the type information is gone, and it is not an analytics layer, because of the cell ceiling.
